About North East Skin

North East Skin (NES)

North East Skin is a more recently established membership organisation. The aim of North East Skin is to support and promote research into skin diseases in North East England. North East Skin works to encourage fundraising, by its members and by the public, for The North Eastern Skin Research Fund which awards grants to research projects led by clinical dermatologists

Skin disorders are extremely common.  For example, over half the population are affected by skin disease each year, with up to a third of the population being affected at any one time.  One out of every five patients seeking help from their GP does so for skin problems.

The Hidden Impact of Skin Disease

Skin disease often causes physical symptoms such as itch and discomfort.  Furthermore, skin disorders can be very disabling, affecting social interaction, and leading to social isolation.  Problems are often long-term and disabling and can severely affect quality of life.  The psychological effects are often under-appreciated.  However, skin disease rarely kills so investment into research has been relatively neglected.  Yet, the rate of the potentially life-threatening skin cancer melanoma continues to rise.
